WEDNESDAY

I missed the past three days, as things starting getting a bit hectic once it got to Wednesday. On Wednesday morning we took a News Presenting Workshop with Dianne from the Broadcasting School at CPIT, who is the vocal trainers who did work with us on Monday’s rotations. We were split into groups as a Newsteam, and I was the Main Anchor with Morgan, Kyle and Olivia did an I/V while Jess did the sport and Dylan did the weather.

I had heaps of fun doing it, and Dianne was rather impressed with my speech. I heard that she said some stuff about me in the Production Office and then all of a sudden some of the T.C tutors decided that they’d go out of their way to talk to me. Funny that. Then in the afternoon of Wednesday we nominated our roles, and I went for presenter and also put myself up to do the B.T.C documentaries, along with three other guys who nominated themselves separately.

THURSDAY

The next morning I was busy as I had to go out and shoot a Short Film as a deranged murderer for somebody and then I had to come back and get this Documentary done, then play Simon Cowell. After the film I wrote a script for the DOCO TEAM, just to get us on track. I left them to it until 5 coming in and out and they seemed fine, until I came in found that no work had been done at all. Then I was in bad place. These were important pieces of video and they needed to be done by friday.

I found out that two of the guys I was working with had NEVER done editing or camerawork so had no idea where to go, and the other guy was fiddling around and trying to be too fancy with his Mac and FINAL CUT PRO, yet we had made no progress. Long story short, I had a spaz and then was at school til 12 o clock at night finishing of the work.

FRIDAY

While everyone is having their meeting, Caleb is attempting to edit the rest of it as some of the video had NO AUDIO, kind of important and my camera man couldn’t work it out, so I had to. I did, and the project was finished by 12 that day, ready for lunch and a walk through rehearsal that afternoon.

I met my beautiful friends Renee, Charlotte, Dermott and Lara who I spent the rest of the night with, and we had a bit of a strobe light dance in the dorm til 12 again, and that was nice just to have a “hang out” afternoon

SATURDAY

THE BIG SHOW. – “Splash” – the title of BTC 29. It was so frickin awesome, was a little sad when the director missed a whole entire link of ours, but still it was bloody awesome. Kat and Lynn’s Top10 countdown, priceless . (bastard card wouldn’t be much use there)

Then – we had tosay goodbye

My eyes were glazed with salty water but I didn’t fully cry. It was so lame, because we had to say goodbye. One of the best weeks of my life if not the best, definitely what I needed Just to get away from it all and do what I love the most.

and yes, I was a presenter, yipee, yeah it was okay

BTC // DAY TWO

Started with the morning meeting as it always does. For the morning I went with a few others with the Course Direcor Simon Williams to do a workshop on writing TV News, as he used to work in a TV Newsroom. We looked at a mock story and mainly had general discussion on getting a tip on a story – planning it – then executing it, using the mock story as a catalyst. We didnt record the story which disappointed myself and others.

Then it was just before lunch and I was waiting for the scree-acting workshop when a bunch of crazy students came piling through the hallway and asked -can you do a really dirty English accent- I was like -yeah FOR SURE – then thez dragged me into their Jerry Springer type reality talk show where I was the negatively influential friend of a man whose wife was on the show, accusing him of sleeping with other lady man ladies, a common story. It went terribly, but it was good for a laugh.

The acting workshop was interesting. It was all based on screen acting and was taught by an ex Toi Whakaari student, Jodie Bate, who is the smaller european lady on the popular childrens show THE GO SHOW. I wasnt expecting her, and at first I didnt recognize her, though I was sure I knew her face. When she said, it was CLICK. That show that drove me insane in the mornings as my brother sat -keen bean- in front of the television and I was getting ready for school, how could I miss her

She took us through exercises. Then I went down to studio two and was a camera man for a group of girls who were attempting a GO SHOW like show for children. The camera was right next to a light, and it was so low, everytime I panned, my head hit the light xD

That summed up my day, while being asked by different groups to act in their films as

Simon Cowell / Harry Potter / and a creepy deranged murderer

A compliment on my manner. It should be awesome

Massively looking forward to tomorrow, OBS trip and also the News Presenting Workshop, I will go insane if I miss it

BTC // DAY ONE

Despite the early start I was up until early hours of this morning. The previous morning I had conversed for 3 hours on the phone to Australia, in an unexpected call from my father. We ended the call at 12am, though it was really 1am, as day light saving kicked in, so I was a tired lad. Waking up at 12pm the next day was in no way a help to my sleeping patterns, as it was though I was jetlagged, though that excuse sounds terribly pathetic as I only travelling for 40 minutes, a lesser time than to Wellington, and the Swiss exchange student here just laughed at me. Also they have a grandfather clock which quite pleasantly strikes every hour / half hour and quarter to the hour/ conveniently so at all hours of the morning. I didn’t have to check my phone after two hours in bed, as the reverberated dong gave me all the information I needed.

Enough about that! DAY ONE! A rather interesting day and the most unnerving one for all the participants as most knew nobody.

We took part in rotations according to our registration numbers, including EDITING / FIELD / STUDIO WORK / PRESENTING. Editing was up first, and I didn’t really take to it, same as another student I met, Morgan Waru, a girl from Christchurch who knew nobody just as I didn’t. Her and I had both worked with other software ADOBE PREMIERE PRO, so shared our opinions on that. The first day, of course like in anything, was just to establish where things were, what was important safety rules etc. and to get the students around all the aspects of the course to find what they enjoyed the most, though I had already eyed up the lapel microphone and chair, right in front of the camera.

We did exercises in all workshops, though were rather tame, but one caught my eye especially (and naturally) and that was the Presenting workshop in studio two. It is run by a lady who is the voice coach at the CPIT Broadcasting School in Christchurch and taught us a few vocal basics. She has an interesting personality, as she is an ex-broadcaster, and one you would most likely expect from an ex-broadcaster. Rather strong and dominant, she is well aware of who she is and where she stands, or atleast she makes it clear where she does stand as shown when one students asked her something about Mike McRoberts in a rather smart tone and she replied “I taught Mike McRoberts darling”, turned and continued to speak in who all so proper accent. BURN!

I couldn’t help but laugh under my breath as many others did. She is, later in the week, running a news workshop, so I am extremely interested in that aspect of it all, and am looking forward that very much!

We have been warned of busier days ahead, and I shall keep you filled in.

the ego has landed

Here I sit, nestled in a beautiful place amongst beautiful people, and it all seems fitting for a damn beautiful week.

I really enjoyed my flight. The ears were fine, and I met a nice two from South Canterbury who are really into performing arts and had just watched the Wearable Arts expo in Wellington. I grabbed a few aerial shots from my JetStar A-320 window seat, then quite skillfully emptied a quarter of the contents of my pump drink bottle into my bag. I know, very much like me is it not X.o

The Wilsons, who have offered accomodation are wonderful people. I was terrified as I had to pick them out from every other crowd at the airport, but knowing that they were close acquaintances of my step fathers mother, when I saw this dashing couple, a cut above the rest, I knew for sure it was them. They took me for tour along the route I was to walk every morning to St Andrews College and I took a stroll into the Beyond the Camera base. A few of students there just oogled at me. I gestured a HI with my eyebrows, but they didn’t take to it. Too cool for school it seems

I’m having a great time so far / though the hard work is to come!

Preparation / The Week of Weeks

It’s like counting down to a marathon. I’m pumped. I’m ready. I’m sweating in fear and excitement just thinking about it. The long yards. The pee stops along the way. Though I couldn’t run more than 100metres if I tried.

Beyond the Camera is a broadcasting course that takes place a St Andrews College in Christchurch , where secondary students from all around New Zealand get together and hone their skills in what is six days of producing, directing, recording and presenting mayhem. The first five days are made up of teachings and lectures , including “hands on deck” broadcasting and producing movies and segments for the final sixth day, which brings together all the BTC students in one group where they have the chance to shine as cameramen, directors, presenters, sound engineers and so forth, in producing a one and half hour live to air show, which also has a live audience X.o

That, I can imagine, will be a rather daunting task! AND I’m not sure what I want to do, as so many areas interest me! I’m going to have to pick off my competition, I can imagine so in terms of presenting, they’ll all be fighting for the top, which I guess will make it all more interesting. Though I want to make friends not enemies. Oh shut up Caleb! Put on your game face and stop being a blouse!

I’ve also been asked by the CAREERS OFFICE at school (who have been my rock in getting to BTC!) to record a video diary of my experience at BTC……and I don’t know if I’m toooooo fond of that idea.7am in the morning in some stranded place, hair is boof, and my surroundings are similar to being in a series of survivor. I will look like a gorilla that has just been defrosted after years of being frozen! And I’m just so pleased that everyone in the school will get to see me in such a wonderful state, what I’ve always dreamed of really. Might get a shirtless shot of me too yeah it’s okay! I threw up in my mouth too, just thinking about the flattering image.
